Updates from AIJAC

British and Arab Antisemitism

December 20, 2001
Number 12/01 #09

Barring unexpected developments, this will be the last Update for this year. AIJAC is closed over the Christmas and New Years public holiday period, but will re-open on Jan. 7, and Updates will resume at that time.

In view of this, I hope readers will excuse an unusually long Update. The heart of it is a large compilation of media comment from the Middle East in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, prepared by the American anti-racism organisation, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Given our past frequent reference to the problems of antisemitism and anti-Americanism in Middle East media, I thought it would be good for readers to have access to a large body of examples to illustrate what we are talking about. Some of you might not want to read the whole lot, but I hope you will at least dip in a toe and have a look at a few examples. (If you go the ADL website, http://www.adl.org you can also have a look at some of the rather nasty cartoons that accompany the report.) However, before you do that, you should certainly read the article by British journalist Barbara Amiel, the wife of Canadian media tycoon Conrad Black, below. Amiel points out how anti-Israel sentiments have made open antisemitism acceptable for much of the British elite, but that Arafat's behaviour and the Sept. 11 attacks are starting to open people's eyes.

Have a good holiday, everyone.

What those in the London salons don't -- or won't -- see

Barbara Amiel

LONDON - In a column in last week's London Spectator, Petronella Wyatt noted that "since September 11 anti-Semitism and its open expression has become respectable at London dinner tables."

This is an accurate observation and cannot be avoided by simply staying at home.

Recently, the ambassador of a major EU country politely told a gathering at my home that the current troubles in the world were all because of "that sh-tty little country Israel".

"Why," he asked, "should the world be in danger of World War Three because of those people?"

At a private lunch last month, the hostess - doyenne of London's political salon scene - made a remark to the effect that she couldn't stand Jews and everything happening to them was their own fault.

When this was greeted with a shocked silence, she chided her guests on what she assumed was their hypocrisy. "Oh come on," she said, "you all feel like that."

Once that remark would have cost her licence as a serious political hostess, but clearly she believes the zeitgeist is blowing her way.

The editor of a major British newspaper came to our home, and I can tell Petronella Wyatt that it can be just as awkward with good friends at lunch as it is with strangers at dinner.

The editor is a decent man but his paper habitually blames Israel's "opposition to peace" for the problems in the Middle East and lectures them to negotiate. "But, look," he was asked, "Arafat does not believe in the right of the Jewish people to a state. How can the Israelis negotiate in that situation?"

The editor replied with disarming honesty: "You have put your finger on the weak point in our argument."

All this is not as bad as it seems. True, these remarks are exceptionally painful for some British Jews who feel beleaguered aliens in their own land. For myself, it merits only a shrug.

One is irritated when, as last October, the community hall of a north London synagogue burnt down in what police labelled a racist arson attack and the matter barely rated a mention except in the Jewish press.

The Monday after the triple suicide bombings in Israel that killed 26 and injured around 200, the Evening Standard turned to Charles Glass, an old anti-Israel hand. Glass wrote: "Palestinians kill Israelis. Israelis kill Palestinians. Who killed first? No one remembers and it does not matter."

For the past 25 years, I've watched sad-faced Israeli activists trudge around Western capitals with heavy hearts beating under ill-fitting suits. They carry folders of transcripts and videotapes to document the misrepresentations in the press and the moral hypocrisy of the world towards Israel.

They want to win the war of ideas on its merits. Their attention to detail in translating the hate literature of the Middle East and the hate-filled speeches of its leaders is commendable.

It's enlightening to read, for example, their studies of Syrian and Palestinian Authority school textbooks that explain to young schoolchildren that the Jews are a people made up of rapists, murderers and thieves.

It is sad to learn that such PA textbooks are used by the UN in its schools for Palestinian refugees. But something new is "blowin' in the wind".

Today, after years in the media desert, Israel's experts and front-line activists are slowly finding some media doors opening to them. They may think it is their own perseverance. But I think it is the daisy cutter effect.

For years, I said that Jews were out of fashion and I understood why. The world was sick of the Middle East problem: why should it be inconvenienced by the cost and the ripple effect of terrorism?

The West defeated the Third Reich and we Jews were no longer in need of a lifeboat: indeed, today we would probably be safer just about anywhere rather than the Middle East. But events in the past year or so changed the equation and our rehabilitation has begun. The Arab/ Muslim world overplayed its hand.

Their first wrong move was the rejection of prime minister Ehud Barak's offer in 2000. Even if you looked at that proposal from an Arab point of view and believed that a Palestinian state comprising 95 per cent of the West Bank and a shared Jerusalem was not sufficient, you couldn't possibly argue that such a deal should be rejected out of hand.

The second mistake was launching the Al-Aqsa intifada after rejecting that deal. Eventually, the world saw that it was not Ariel Sharon's walk on the Temple Mount that caused the new intifada (a walk pre-cleared with the Muslim authorities) but Arafat's decision to escalate violence for tactical reasons.

The greatest error of all was when bin Laden, acting in the name of the Arab/Muslim world, decided - with a total incomprehension of what this would entail - to blow up Lower Manhattan and blow it up at a time when the American administration was in the hands of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld and not Clinton and Gore.

The Arab street remained silent at best or cheered the WTC bombing even as some of their leaders made ritual condemnations of it. Almost overnight, a blindfold fell off America's eyes. Appeasement didn't work.

The problem was not Israel's intransigence, nor even the conflict that comes from Israel's existence: the problem is Islamism.

Islam itself is split between Islam as a religion that can be essentially peaceful - endorsing the qualities of charity and mercy - and militant Islam (Islamism), which is intolerant and expansionist. Islam periodically goes into this expansionary phase and is now in one.

That is why in the past few years some mosques in the West have seen violent incidents, including murders, as radical mullahs fight moderates for supremacy. Militant Islam wants to be the dominant force in the world.

Its crusade has Muslims fighting Christians in Indonesia, Sudan and Pakistan. Christians in Lebanon have largely fled. Muslim fights Muslim in Algeria. Islamism has been on the move all right, but it hasn't a chance now, because it finally woke up America.

It took the blowing up of three planes on an airstrip outside Jordan by Palestinian terrorists in 1970 to turn the world's attention to the Palestinian question. One regrets to say that it has taken a lot more violence to get the world to focus on the true nature of Islamism.

Powerful as the truth may be, it needs a nudge from 16,000lb daisy cutter bombs once in a while. The Arab/Muslim world's intransigence comes into sharper focus when we see the Americans liberate Afghanistan from the Taliban in six weeks and a cornered Arafat unable to go to the bathroom without the risk of being blown into the next world.

Nothing succeeds like powerful bombs, as bin Laden explained in his latest video release. "When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature they will like the strong horse," he said.

"Some of the media said that in Holland, in one of the centres, the number of people who accepted Islam during the days that followed the operations [attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon] were more than the people who accepted Islam in the past 11 years."

Bin Laden understands the power of a successful show of force all right, though he seems slow to grasp that America's horses are stronger than his.

Don't worry, Petronella. It is both sad and true that the consequences of super-liberalism led to suicide bombers and intifadas in Israel and to the attacks in America. But the US has shown it is no paper tiger.

All those people bad-mouthing the Jews and Israel will quieten down. You are looking at the tail end of the train but the engine has already turned a corner and is going in the opposite direction.

Nothing succeeds like success. America is driving this train and the world will get on board - though the last carriage may be those London dinner parties.

SEPTEMBER 11 AND ARAB MEDIA:
THE ANTI-JEWISH AND ANTI-AMERICAN BLAME GAME

The ongoing anti-Semitic, anti-American and anti-Israel demonization in the Arab and Muslim media intensified following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The blame-Israel, blame-America conspiracy theories proliferated, with widely circulated rumors of Israeli/Zionist/Jewish responsibility for the attacks and the subsequent Anthrax-laced letters. Other articles in the Arab media offered justification for - even delight at - the attacks because of American foreign policy.

Such accusations and depictions have long been present in the Arab and Muslim media. Incendiary anti-Semitic, anti-American and anti-Israel articles and caricatures appear with regularity in newspapers of countries who are American allies, and with whom Israel has peaceful relations or who are negotiating partners.

Since 9-11, media outlets in the countries and entities which have joined the U.S. coalition against terrorism - Egypt, Syria, Iran, Jordan, Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Lebanon, Pakistan - have printed and broadcast stories and opinion that belie their government's cooperation with Washington.

ISRAEL TO BLAME FOR SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS/ANTHRAX SCARE

"An Israeli government spokesman reported a few days ago the news of arresting a number of Israelis by the US intelligence bodies in Florida. This might seem strange but what is more significant is the deliberate ignorance by the Israeli government of the reason for the arrests. The Israelis did not even mention the reason or the case for which their subjects were detained. The point is that a big quantity of the Anthrax germ was held with the Israelis when they were arrested. Moreover, the detainees had 15 charts of the New York Trade Center and eight charts of the Pentagon building which were attacked on September 11th. This is in addition to other six charts of the White House, which was among the would-be targets of the September 11th attacks. According to discreet US reports, the charts found with the Israelis had accurately drawn the Pentagon building and the World Trade Center and defined their geometric projections, as well as, precisely depicted the many floors. Further, some data included in the charts define the itineraries of civil passenger planes and their destinations!!! The question is: Why does the American Administration accuse others of the September 11th attacks even there is no evidence that proves the accusation of others? This is not in defence of others, but a logical analysis of realities. The Israeli government may find pretexts to get its subjects out of the circle of suspicion despite the fact that the documents and the deadly germ found with them are sufficient to place them in the dock as terrorist Number One, who have the ability to carry out attacks such as those of New York and Washington. It would be easy to accuse others since the Zionists have a tremendous influence in the US decision-making circles, but the Americans shouldn’t have taken the easy way to launch war against a poor nation under the pretext of terrorism at a time when the Israelis have been practising the ugliest acts of terrorism against the defenceless Palestinian people. Uncle Sam shouldn’t have connived with the Israeli terrorist acts, particularly that they have documents relevant to the attacks. We just ask Uncle Sam to face reality not to fight windmills in Afghanistan or elsewhere!"

-Syria Times, Syrian newspaper, November 14, 2001, by M. Agha

"Six Israelis suspected of involvement in the attacks on New York and Washington were arrested in the US, to be later released. This confirms our strong suspicions about the involvement of Israel’s Mossad in the ugly crime. If we look carefully into this matter, we find no more influential sides in the US that the Israeli Mossad agents, who have the ability to penetrate and the capability to execute with high efficiency."

- editorial in Okaz, Saudi mass-circulation daily, posted November 6, 2001 on The Times of India online, http://www.timesofindia.com/articleshow.asp?art_id=947236290

"Bin Laden’s Al-Qa’ida is a possible suspect, but I would also suggest the involvement of the Israeli Mossad. The scare may be an attempt to shift attention from greater Israeli atrocities in the Palestinian territories."

- Al-Ahram Weekly Online, Egyptian newspaper, October 25-31, 2001, article entitled "Who’s doing it?" by Mamdouh Attiya, who is purported to be an expert on global strategic matters and weapons of mass destruction.

"The Syrian official [Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Turki Mohammad Saqar] said that the racist Zionist regime will be the beneficiary of the recent incidents and added that one day after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, Israel killed 12 Palestinians and was proud of it. He also said that there are reliable evidence to prove that the Israelis have been involved in these incidents and added that no Jewish employee was present in the World Trade Organization buildings on the day of the attack, and Sharon’s visit to the U.S. was postponed before the incident."

- Tehran Times.com, Iranian newspaper, October 25, 2001; Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), October, 24, 2001

"Everyone is assuming that Islamic terrorists are to blame for the Boca Raton Anthrax incident. We believe that the terrorists are actually Zionists . . . The envelope sent to the Boca Raton news service with the "Star of David" charm appears to also come [from] Zionists. They, the Zionists, want to silence us because they do not like what we write. Everyone is assuming that the dangers we face is from Islamic terrorists, but our experience has been different. We fear Zionist terrorists more."

- Syria Times online, Syrian newspaper, October 16, 2001, reprinting an article under the headline, "Anthrax Terrorists May be Zionists," by Hector Carreon, head of the Nation of Aztlan, a fringe California-based Hispanic nationalist organization that has published several anti-Semitic articles in the past year in its online publication, La Voz de Aztlan.

"The September 11 terrorist attacks on World Trade Centre (WTC) in New York and Pentagon in Washington were masterminded by an international Zionist organization, ‘The Elders of Zion,’ as a reaction to the strong condemnation of the religio-ethnic cleansing policy being carried out by the Israelis in the Palestinian territories at the 3rd UN Conference against Racism recently held in the South African town of Durban. According to an article published in a Lahore-based Urdu weekly, ‘The Jihad Times,’ the 300-member apex Zionist body consisting of peers of the Judaism in the world, decided to avenge the anti-Israel bashing at the Durban moot. It tasked the Zionist-controlled FBI and the Israeli secret agency Shabak, just second to Mossad, to carry out the devastating attacks, writes the weekly on the basis of strong evidence." "The Shabak officials were preparing films of the attack and were jubilant over the success of the operation and were seen dancing on the occasion." "The Israeli consulate . . . immediately contacted the Jews in the FBI high command on the issue who directed the investigators not to make the incident public through [the] media." "Another extremely important information leaked out was that around 4,000 Israelis working in the World Trade Center had been issued a secret directive before the incident not to report for duty on September 11 which they complied with. This is evident from the fact that not a single Israeli or American Jew working in the WTC was reported killed or missing. The EoZ [Elders of Zion] is learnt to have instructed the Zionist controlled media to unleash a vilification campaign against the Muslims portraying them as the perpetrators of the attacks on the U.S. cities."

- excerpts from an article entitled "Zionists Could Be Behind Attack on WTC and Pentagon," posted October 14, 2001 on the Web site, www.islamweb.net/english, which is registered to the State of Qatar Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs. The "facts" in this posting are attributed to the Lahore-based Jihad Times.

The results of an opinion poll commissioned by the Pakistani Web site, http://www.Paknews.com, reported that 71 percent of respondents thought it was a "possible fact" that 4,000 Jews failed to report to work on September 11 because they had advance warning of the terrorist attacks. (The Washington Post, Oct. 13, 2001)

"Following the incident, Muslims and Arabs stopped feeling that is was safe to leave [their homes in America]… Muslims do not feel safe even going to the hospitals, because some Jewish doctors in one of the hospitals poisoned sick Muslim children, who then died . . . Although the Americans suspect that the Zionists are behind the act [the terrorist attacks], none had the courage to talk about it in public . . . The Jewish element is as Allah described when he said: ‘They disseminate corruption in the land,’ We know they have always broken agreements, unjustly murdered the prophets and betrayed the faith. Can they be expected to live up to their contracts with us? There people murdered the prophets; do you think they will stop spilling our blood? No."

- Egyptian Sheikh Muhammad Al-Gamei’a, the Al-Azhar University representative in the U.S. and former Imam of the Islamic Cultural Center and Mosque of New York City, in an interview for the Web site www.lilatalqadr.com, an unofficial Al-Azhar University site, October 4, 2001 (The Middle East Research Institute (MEMRI), October 17, 2001, No. 288)

"Atta Sr. accused the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, of being behind the New York and Washington Attacks."

- Al-Ahram Weekly Online, Egyptian newspaper, September 27 – October 3, 2001, by Jailan Halawi

"To many Arabs, the culprit was obvious: the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service. ‘Who would be the beneficiary of this?’ asked a columnist in Al-Arabi newspaper, mouthpeice of the Nasserist Party. ‘The Mossad, of course.’ This assumption should come as no surprise: after watching Israel’s behaviour in the region for many decades, when things blow up, Arabs naturally assume Israeli involvement. The conspiracy theorists adduced plenty of other circumstantial evidence to support their claims. Sharon had a golden opportunity to tarnish the image of the Arabs and Muslims and cause a deep schism in Arab/American relations, they said. Advocates of this theory also pointed out that the Mossad has targeted American interests before, ever since the 1960s."

- Al-Ahram Weekly Online, Egyptian newspaper, September 27 – October 3, 2001 by Omayma Abdel-Latif (story on the family of Muhammad Atta, who is believed to be key organizer of the September 11 attacks)

"Ex-chief of the Egyptian Intelligence Service Amin Hweidi said the Israeli Mossad may have a hand in planning the destructive attacks in New York and Washington. . . Hweidi said he did not rule out an Israeli role in the US bombings whether by the Mossad or other Israeli intelligence services because Israel is the only beneficiary of all what has taken place."

- Syrian Times online, Syrian newspaper, September 27, 2001

"Why not suspect Mossad of having sought to shake the United States and the world, upon directives from (Israeli Prime Minister) Ariel Sharon who wants to divert attention away from his aggressive plot, and link the attacks to the Arabs, the Muslims, and Osama bin Laden. If Osama bin Laden really had at his disposal such fantastic capabilities, sophisticated electronic talents and a meticulous organisation, as they (the Americans) claim, he would have directed all that against Israel for the simple reason that it is closer."

Ath-Thawra, Syrian government newspaper, September 19, 2001 (AFP, September 19, 2001)

"With the announcement of the attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, the international media, particularly the Israeli one, hurried to take advantage of the incident and started mourning 4000 Israelis who work at the two towers. Then suddenly, no one ever mentioned anything about those Israelis and later it became clear that they remarkably did not show up in their jobs the day the incident took place. No one talked about any Israeli being killed or wounded in the attacks. Arab diplomatic sources revealed to the al-Watan newspaper published in Oman that those Israelis remained absent that day based on hints from the Israeli General Security Apparatus, the Shabak, the fact which evoked unannounced suspicions on American officials who wanted to know how the Israeli government learned about the incident before it occurred, and the reasons why it refrained from informing the U.S authorities of the information it had. Suspicions had increased further after Israeli newspaper Yadiot Ahranot revealed that the Shabak prevented Israeli premier Ariel Sharon from traveling to New York and particularly to the city’s eastern coast to participate in a festival organized by the Zionist organizations in support of the "Israel". Aharon Bernie, the commentator at the newspaper, brought up the issue and came up with a negative conclusion, saying "no answer". He then asked about the clue behind the Shabak’s position in preventing Sharon’s participation, and again without giving an answer. Bernie added that Sharon, who was delighted for having his speech on top of the festival agenda, asked the head of the organization to mediate and convince the Shabak to change its position, but his attempts were in vein. The next day after Sharon’s secretary officially announced that Sharon would not participate the incident took place. For its part, the Israeli Ha’aretz newspaper revealed that the FBI arrested five Israelis four hours after the attack on the Twin Towers while filming the smoking skyline from the roof of their company’s building. The FBI had arrested the five for "puzzling behavior". They are said to have been caught videotaping the disaster in what was interpreted as cries of joy and mockery."

- from the English language version of the Web site of Lebanon’s Al-Manar Television posted September 17, 2001.

"The Arab wise-guys (referring to those who condemned the attacks) are granting the US – who has opposed them in all international forums and in all arenas of the war – permission to attack their peoples and their friends, especially in light of the fact that the American investigators are restricting their investigation to [suspects with] Arab names, as if the Arabs are entirely to blame… It never occurs to the US that there are others who benefit more from the attacks on the US cities than the Arabs and the Muslims. I refer mainly to Israel, especially since one of the suspects mentioned by the media lived in occupied Palestine and could very possibly have been used by Israel…"

- excerpts from an article by University of Lebanon lecturer Mustafa Juzo, published in Al-Hayat (London), September 17, 2001 (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 272)

"You must look inside. F-16s don’t scramble in time, though they had 18 minutes after the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Radar gets jammed. Transponders are turned off. A flight to Los Angeles turns to Washington and is in the air for 45 minutes, and the world’s most sophisticated air defense doesn’t go into action. I tell you, it was a coup [attempt], and I can’t say for sure who was behind it, but it’s the Israelis who are creating so much misery in the world. The Israelis don’t want to see any power in Washington unless it’s subservient to their interests, and President Bush has not been subservient."

- Major General Hamid Gul, former head of Pakistan’s intelligence service, in an interview with Rob Nordland of Newsweek, September 14, 2001.

"What happened is, in my opinion, the product of Jewish, Israeli, and American Zionism, and the act of the great Jewish Zionist mastermind that controls the world's economy, media, and politics…The goal of the suicide operations in New York was, in my opinion, to push the American people, President Bush, and NATO to submit even more to the Jewish Zionist ideology and the historical goals [it has held] since the Basel Congress in 1897, under the Zionist-Jewish slogan of 'Islamic terror'… We have said in the past that Jewish-Israeli-American Zionism is leading the region to disaster, and that it is trying to lead the Americans and its worldwide allies to world disaster. Perhaps what happened on American [ground] is the beginning of the world disaster."

- Al-Dustour, Jordanian newspaper, September 13, 2001, by columnist Ahmad Al-Muslih (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270).

"Who committed the attacks? Terrorists. Then fingers are immediately pointed at Arabs and Islam, as if those who accuse us were already mobilizes to do so. We as Arabs, Muslims, Christians, are not terrorists. It is Zionism and Zionist organisations in the western world who are making false accusations against us."

- Ath-Thawra, Syrian government newspaper, September 13, 2001 (AFP, September 13, 2001)

"Maybe some will think that I am hallucinating things when I speak of Jewish Zionist hands behind the terrible event that struck at the US. Maybe [they will say] that this is one of many hands. But anyone following the reactions has noticed one headline: the American-Zionist-Israeli 'Holy Alliance' indicate that "international terror" is to blame. By international terror, [this alliance] means, first and foremost, Islam and the Arabs…In a lengthy interview with the Arab League representative in Paris for the [Egyptian] French-language Al-Nil television channel, [the representative] refrained from pointing directly at the Jews, because as an official he cannot do such a thing before an investigation reveals it, but he [implied] it…We must direct all diplomatic and media efforts not only towards washing our hands of it and denying our involvement from the defendant's seat but also to [launching] a counter-campaign that will shift us to a stronger offensive position."

- Al-Dustour, Jordanian newspaper, September 13, 2001, by Lebanese-Jordanian Holocaust denier Hayat Al-Hweiek 'Atiya (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270)

"It is clear that Israel is the one to benefit greatly from the bloody, loathsome terror operation that occurred yesterday, and that it seeks to benefit still more by accusing the Arabs and Muslims of perpetrating this loathsome attack… Only Israel does not fear the discovery that the Jews are behind this operation, if indeed it was so; who in the US or outside it would dare to accuse them, as every blow to them means talk of a new 'Holocaust?' They, more than anyone, are capable of hiding a criminal act they perpetrate, and they can be certain that no one will ask them about what they do."

- Al-Dustour, Jordanian newspaper, September 13, 2001, by columnist Rakan Al-Majali (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270)

"I personally eliminate the possibility that Arab and Islamic organizations stood behind these acts… Why [couldn't it be] that Zionist organizations perpetrated it, so that Israel could destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque while the world was preoccupied with what happened in America…?"

- Al-Rai, Jordanian newspaper, September 13, 2001, by columnist Jihad Jabara (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270)

"I say that Israel benefits from the explosions… We all know that there are extreme religious groups in the US who believe that the coming of the Messiah is near, and who aspire to purify Americans of all their human crimes. Among them are those who believe in committing suicide in order to reach Paradise, through punishing the human race. Mass suicide of entire groups has already occurred. We do not know whether Jews as well, more precisely the Mossad, have not had a hand in what happened, out of evil and dangerous intentions."

- Al-Dustour, Jordanian newspaper, September 13, 2001, by columnist Mussa Hawamdeh (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270)

MUSLIMS/ARABS NOT TO BLAME FOR SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS

"Management and coordination of these attacks would have needed a long period of study and planning which would have been impossible unless some people inside the United States had cooperated and even masterminded the incidents . . . These attacks would have been impossible without the cooperation of some elements inside the security forces of the United States."

- Abbas Maleki, director of the Caspian Sea Studies Office, quoted in an article in Tehran Times.com, Iranian newspaper, October 22, 2001, entitled "September 11 attacks impossible without help of U.S. groups."

"Osama bin Laden and those with him have said what indicates that they stand behind this carefully planned act. We, in turn, ask: Are bin Laden and his supporters the only ones behind what happened or is there another power with advanced technical expertise that acted with them?"

- Prince Sultan, Saudi’s Defense Minister, in an interview published in Kuwait’s as-Seyassah newspaper, October 22, 2001 (Reuters)

"Anti-terrorism efforts should not sideline efforts to identify the psychological and political roots of this phenomenon. U.S. officials intend to define terrorism as a phenomenon unrelated to U.S. policies and limit to the hard-line Islamic groups. Consequently, the U.S. is trying to evade its responsibilities in creating this phenomenon. Currently, there are two sorts of terrorism in the world. First, state-sponsored terrorism, the best of which in the world is the Zionist regime which is supported by the U.S. and the UK. Over the past fifty years, the Zionist regime has been the main source of disorder and insecurity in the Arab World."

- The Tehran Times.com, Iranian newspaper, October 16, 2001, fabricating a quote of former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski.

"I don’t think it would be contentious to say that the unprecedented disaster witnessed by New York and Washington the day before yesterday was planned and executed by American citizens. The list of potential perpetrators resentful on American foreign policy is tediously long, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that neither the Palestinians nor the Serbs were implicated . . . Those who violated the quintessential symbols of the most powerful country in the world – the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, the White House – could not have been Palestinians, who are in no position to contemplate, let alone implement, anything more than acts of sabotage designed to pressure America to alter its unfair Middle East policy"

- Al-Ahram Weekly Online, Egyptian newspaper, September 13-19, 2001, article entitled "An Inside Job?" by Salah Montasser

"There is a possibility that this was an [act of] ancient retribution… The US declared war on Japan, and used the atomic bomb for the first time, against Hiroshima and Nagasaki. [The bomb] killed more than 221,983 Japanese, and was the cause of the Japanese defeat and the end of the war in 1945. Has the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki been resurrected sixty years later?"

- Tishrin, Syrian newspaper, September 13, 2001, by columnist Hassan M, Yussef (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270)

"[Perhaps] the perpetrators of the attack belong to local American militias… It could also be that they are young people who hacked into the computer directing internal air traffic and aimed the airplanes at painful targets…"

- Al-Safir, Lebanese newspaper, September 12, 2001, by columnist Nur Al-Din Sat’e (MEMRI, September 20, 2001, No. 270)

CELEBRATION OF SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS/ANTHRAX SCARE

"The truth is that I wondered how to begin! Should I greet you [i.e. anthrax], or should I curse you? Should I hold my tongue?… I will begin by saying: Oh Anthrax, despite your wretchedness, you have sown horror in the heart of the lady of arrogance, of tyranny, of boastfulness! Your gentle touch has made the U.S.'s life rough and pointless. You have filled the lady who horrifies and terrorizes the world with fear, and her feet almost fail to bear [her weight] in horror and fear of you. Because of you, she has lost confidence in the moment in which she lives, or in which she will live . . . In sound mind, I thank you and confess that I like you, I like you very much. May you continue to advance, to permeate, and to spread. If I may give you a word of advice, enter the air of those ‘symbols,' the water faucets from which they drink, and the pens with which they draft their traps and conspiracies against the wretched peoples… Turn the bodies of the tyrants into matches burning slowly and gradually, so that they understand that the truth belongs to Allah and that they should give those entitled to rights their rights."

- op-ed article in Al-Risala, Gaza-based Hamas weekly, November 7, 2001, by columnist Dr. 'Atallah Abu Al-Subh, entitled "To Anthrax" (MEMRI, November 7, 2001, No. 297)

"As a lawyer, I say to Suspect No. 1, as the American government calls him: Oh Osama . . . you are a hero in the full sense of the word. [You possess] all the manly virtues, those [virtues] lacking in the half-men who control the Muslim and Arab resources (i.e. Arab rulers). For this reason, you will continue to live in our hearts and in our minds . . . Allah’s peace, mercy, and blessings are upon you; no peace, no mercy, and no blessings on the traitors and cowards who have been blinded to the truth by the pleasures of domination. May you eradicate American and its ‘infinite justice;’ victory to Islam and the Muslims."

"Although some were sorry about the killing of innocent Americans in Washington and New York, most of [our] people derived satisfaction from the insult to the American pride, and from the shaking of faith that the American cowboy, Little Bush, places in the intelligence apparatuses and their agents throughout the world. There was nearly an Egyptian consensus on the matter, except for a few ministers who, in their hypocrisy, rushed to the American Embassy to ostentatiously offer their condolences."

"Millions across the world shouted in joy: American was hit! . . . This call expressed the sentiments in millions across the world, whom the American master has treated with tyranny, arrogance, bullying, conceit, deceit, and bad taste – like every bully whom no one has yet put in his place. True, thousands of innocents became victims . . .among them Egyptians who had immigrated to the U.S. in search of opportunity and [a better] life; but what can a person do when the neighborhood bully gets [a blow] from behind that shakes his very existence, insults his dignity and humiliates him? Obviously [the person] is glad, even if it is wrong to rejoice . . ."

"President Dubya Bush will continue to struggle between threatening to launch a crusader war and apologizing to the Muslims . . . Apparently, he doesn’t want to understand that he is reaping the thorns sown by himself and all his predecessors in Palestine, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, the Sudan, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and Japan. Behind every act of destruction is a little American demon . . . America cannot see the fate that awaits it, despite everything that happened on that bloody Tuesday; America is on its way to collapse, like all the empires of oppression throughout history. If only our generations would have the chance to witness that dramatic spectacle . . ."

A cook who concocts poison must one day always taste that poison! The world has discovered that the strength of the oppressed is great when the situation becomes unbearable . . . America practically said to the world: Only I will teach you who is Allah. Allah wanted to teach it a lesson… If not for what happened, if the lion had not been wounded in his den, we would think that our prayers were in vain and we would despair… The Americans thought they could not be defeated… They preferred the apes (i.e. the Jews) to human beings, treating human beings from ooutside the US cheaply, supporting homosexuals and usury. They have forgotten that in this universe there is a God whose punishment no one escapes… Allah came because they did not expect him, bombing their hearts with horror…"

"However, another truth is that most Arabs, and perhaps also most of the Third World, did rejoice, not because of the killing of thousands of innocent Americans, but because of the penetration of the bastion of American colonialism and the offensive within its home turf. No one thought for a moment about the people who were inside the tallest of the world's towers as they burned; everyone thought of the American administration and rejoiced at its misfortune, while its leaders scrambled to find a place to hide. There is a large degree of hypocrisy and idiocy. Does anyone think that the CIA does not know how much it is hated by the Arab people, and how happy the oppressed people in the Third World are at the tragedy that has struck it? [Therefore, there is no point] in our trying to prove to them that the Arab people are not gloating over the American misfortune. Can anyone really believe that a people of whom the US has killed hundreds and thousands times the number of people killed in New York and in Boston [sic], is sorry, and is not happy, when he witnesses this smack to the face of its most bitter enemy?"

"There is no reason to rejoice at the misfortune of the American people, who have not yet understood that five million Jews are not worth the sacrifice of all these victims... The US's position in the Arab-Zionist conflict causes Arabs to rejoice over every disaster visited upon the American government, though not on its people, because that government has gone too far in its oppression."

"I considered hiring a professional mourner, so as to adjust myself to the international atmosphere [of] hypocrisy and weeping over the victims of the explosions in America. But I knew that even those [professional mourners] who charge by the hour would refuse, even if I promised $100 for every tear. God, what will I do now? How can I write an article without cursing those terrorists who launched a war not only against the US, but against Western culture? How can I refrain from calling them wild, barbaric, Tatars, people who want to turn back [the clock of] civilization and progress to the days when we struck two flints together to make a fire? How can a columnist who thinks America got its just desserts – a punishment that suits [its crime of] sucking the blood of peoples – [how can he] be saved from the guillotine of the hypocrites… The lies inundate you from television screens, as [the hypocrites] express sorrow, donate blood, and place their intelligence systems at the disposal of the cardboard master… America weeps. Let it seek professional mourners by itself. I beseech you, do not participate in this demonstration of sorrow. If you are murdered by a bully, it is a humiliation; if they force you to march in his funeral procession, it is the zenith of humiliation. Pardon us, America; we have no tears left to share in your sorrow."

"[Those moments of] exquisite, incandescent hell were the most beautiful and precious moments of my life. The towers, the walls, [symbols] of the [American] regime, were a modern, terrifying monster infiltrated by a brave and stinging hornet… This mythological monster was terrible in its pain, in its screams, and in its fall, that resembled Hell. All the media… broadcast these images for us over and over. The generations of the past, and, with Allah's help, the generations to come, will envy us for having witnessed them."

"No man with human feeling can derive pleasure from the sight of the victims' bodies being torn apart, burned, and crushed under the ruins. Allah has created all human beings to live on this land under an umbrella of peace, love, and beauty. But some fools and idiots distort these lofty values and try to impose their behavior, their sick ideology, and their malignant idiocy… One of these was little Bush, whom cursed fate placed on the throne of the government of the superpower that rules the entire world. He is a tyrant; playing golf at his ranch, he smiles and is filled with joy when news reaches him of the number of Arab victims in Palestine, among them women, children, and the elderly. But Bush was woken from… his dream of false power by this blow, from which, I think, he will never recover. What happened in America has never happened before in the history of the human race. Nevertheless, the devil hastened to weep over the ruins, and to call on the world to stand beside the superpower, the symbol of civilization and democracy… Oh Bush, drink from the bitter cup of the blood of your people, so that you will [come to] know that Allah is just!"

"In all honesty, and without beating around the bush: I am happy about [what happened to] America; I am happy about the great number of American dead. Let them accuse me of whatever they want. It doesn’t matter and it does not lessen the happiness and excitement that overwhelm me. No one can make me take back what I say, no matter what their claims and explanations. All the innocent citizens who were killed are victims of America’s barbarism and terror, ranging over half a century . . . Count up the number killed by American weapons in the world and compare it to the number of those killed in the US; you will find that the number of [American dead] is much less than one percent [of the latter]. I have a right to rejoice; I have a right to be filled with happiness; the Americans are finally tasting the bitterness of death."

"I cannot hide my feelings; I cannot restrain my joy. For the first time in my life, I witness with my own eyes the defeat of American arrogance, tyranny, conceit, and evil. For the first time, I ask myself: has Allah finally answered the prayers of the mothers, the pleasing of victims in Palestine, Iraq, and Libya? . . . Should I lie and be hypocritical like the others, condemning the killings of civilians, expressing my sorrow over the American and other victims, or praying and donating blood?! . . . I do not want to pray for the Americans or donate my blood; I do not want to condemn what happened. America is the one who killed them, as it killed us in Iraq, and as it continues to slaughter us in Palestine."

"A few minutes later, I again thought about the people under the ruins, and I began to say to myself: 'What sin had these innocents committed?' I was sorry that my humanity had been contaminated by Zionist America and by world Zionism… But, a few minutes later, the media informed me of new facts: 'Arabs and Muslims were blamed, and were even threatened by retaliation." "This brought me back to the spiritual tomb, in which I am overwhelmed by the aggression, the arrogance, the racism, and the distortion of facts. Inner strength, that saves me from drowning, has helped me to again breathe above the surface of the grave: we will return, we will live, we will win, and we will realize justice for the world, because we are willing to sacrifice ourselves for rights, justice, and the humanity of the world…" "The American people must awake and see the image of [its] policy… a filthy policy that dishonors its owners… That hour on September 11 should be significant for the American decision makers; it must lead to a reexamination of [American] ideas, policy, and strategy. MEDIA CONTROLLED BY ZIONISTS/JEWS

"However, where the discussion threatens to touch upon issues considered 'sensitive' to the judaized establishment which controls TV and radio, it is carefully stage-managed so that 'dangerous' viewpoints are excluded. This is particularly noticeable where discussion concerns matters of the Jewish State of Israel and its not so very glorious aspects, when relating to doubts concerning the alleged mass-slaughter of Jews during WWII and when some one tries to discuss the power wielded by the Jewish minority." "One TV programme on British TV a short time ago was devoted to the subject of ‘anti-Semitism,’ which was presented as being on the increase throughout Europe, including Britain. . . Of course, ‘anti-Semitism’ itself is a misleading term deliberately adopted by the media-controllers so as to suggest that those thus labeled want to ill-treat innocent Jews, even kill them, for no reason than that they are Jews!, whereas the vast majority of people described as 'anti-Semites' simply oppose what they see as excessive Jewish power all over the world and in the Zionist state in particular."

- excerpts from an article entitled "Jewish Control of the Mass Media in Britain," posted November 12, 2001 on the Web site, www.islamweb.net/english, which is registered to the State of Qatar Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

"It is crucial, in the battle against the Jewish racist totalitarianism, to have a basic knowledge about the Jewish media-dictatorship-monopoly and about the political power the Zionists possess and who are - as Jewish political actors - the leaders of this Jewish power."

- excerpts from an article entitled "The Jewish Theory to Rule the World Through the Mass Media" posted November 11, 2001 on the Web site, www.islamweb.net/english, which is registered to the State of Qatar Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

"Thomas Friedman, a Jew, accuses Saudi Arabia and Egypt of not being with the US in its war on Afghanistan. The Washington Post even questions the legitimacy of the government in Egypt by saying that the elections were not fair, that freedom of expression is suppressed and that the political situation is in peril." "There is no doubt that after World War II, the world Jewry has been trying to be as close as possible to the decision-making processes in the West in general and the US in particular — Congress, the Senate and the Pentagon. Zionism convinced the Western world that communism was their enemy No. 1 with Islam occupying the second position. As communism is no longer a threat, Islam is the No. 1 enemy and such a canard is unfortunately believed by many Westerners." "Moreover, as Zionism is surviving on lies, it exploits every opportunity to target Islam and this is evident following the September attacks on the US. Therefore, the US media that are controlled or dominated by Zionists continue attacking Islam, Muslims and Arabs taking advantage of the fact that the prime suspects in the attacks are Arab or Muslim." "The enmity between the West and Islam is growing due to the lies spread Zionism. Zionists claim that Arabs and Muslims are against Israel. They choose to ignore the fact that Israel is an alien outpost in the Arab world. It was Jews who occupied Palestine and displaced its original people." "Still Zionists are trying to make it appear that the just struggle of the Arabs for restoring their rights and land is not only directed against Israel but also against the Western world and that Israel is the best guardian of the West’s interests in the Middle East. So, it is not surprising that the Zionist media tried to equate the September attacks on the US with the legitimate struggle of the Palestinians against Israel and call the Palestinians terrorists. Zionists are trying to poison Arab-US relations to further their own interests." "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Egypt believe in open diplomacy. They have their own perceptions on Afghanistan. It is in Israel’s interests to create a wedge between the West and Arab world. The Western countries should ponder whether it is in their own interests to swallow the Zionist version of everything."

"Since September 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington, Zionist circles have been almost uncontrollably emitting their profound contempt of Islam . . . From occupied Al-Qods, to London, to New York, to California, Zionist, or Zionist-controlled press, has been propagating one message: kill the Muslims, kill the Arabs, kill the terrorists! . . . All of a sudden it seemed as if Zionist and pro-Israeli editors and anchormen, who have a history of poisoning western public opinion with concocted lies and myths about the Palestinian cause, finally seized the long-awaited opportunity to display their deep grudge for Islam and Muslims."

- Iran Daily, October 29, 2001 quoted in an Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) article, October 29, 2001

"The Jews can and do control the American media from the Washington Post to CNN, but they can’t control the flow of the internet. We saw how the American media covered the intifada, and we see now how it is covering the war in Afghanistan. The western media can’t be trusted, it is subservient to big money and Zionist circles."

- statement by the Palestinian Journalist Association reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), October 25, 2001

"These are the facts of Jewish media control in America. Anyone willing to spend several hours in a large library can verify their accuracy. I hope that these facts are disturbing to you, to say the least. Should any minority be allowed to wield such awesome power? Certainly, not and allowing a people with beliefs such as expressed in the Talmud, to determine what we get to read or watch in effect gives this small minority the power to mold our minds to suit their own Talmudic interests, interests which as we have demonstrated are diametrically opposed to the interests of our people. By permitting the Jews to control our news and entertainment media, we are doing more than merely giving them a decisive influence on our political system and virtual control of our government; we also are giving them control of the minds and souls of our children, whose attitudes and ideas are shaped more by Jewish television and Jewish films than by their parents, their schools, or any other influence."

CRITICISM OF THE U.S.

"The U.S. is the enemy of the democratic aspirations of the Arab peoples, it is the friend and protector of dictatorships and autocracies; it is the number one schemer against development in the Arab world. ON GIULIANI’S REJECTION OF THE SAUDI PRINCE’S OFFER

"The Jewish lobby fears the convening of such a conference [to combat terrorism]. It has been trying to equate Palestinian resistance with terrorism, which is unacceptable, illogical. ISRAELIS/JEWS AS NAZIS/HOLOCAUST DENIAL

"Today the leaders and rulers of Israel imitate Hitler’s state machinery in many respects. Zionism is going down the path of Nazism, which leads towards new horrors of mass extermination, tortures, executions, the degradation of democratic liberties and the humiliation of human beings. Despite all this the Israeli Zionist leaders find full support from the US and the EU. This is not only hypocrisy. This policy encourages the Zionists and those encourage such actions are in a way or another collaborators with the criminals."

"…Oh beloved of Allah… We must always remember who the Jews are, what they believe regarding Allah, what their position is regarding the prophets and apostles, and what they say about them in their holy books – that is, in the books they claim are holy. [We must always remember] their view of the Prophet Muhammad, and their corruption in the world, particularly in the Arab and Islamic world." "Oh beloved of Allah… One of the Jews' evil deeds is what has come to be called ‘the Holocaust,' that is, the slaughter of the Jews by Nazism. However, revisionist [historians] have proven that this crime, carried out against some of the Jews, was planned by the Jews' leaders, and was part of their policy… These are the Jews against whom we fight, oh beloved of Allah." On the other hand, [what is our belief] about the Jews? Allah has described them as donkeys who must carry the books of the Torah – but they have not carried them. Our belief, which is true, about the Jews is that Allah is angry at them. They are cursed with the curse of Allah in this world and in the hereafter. Therefore, we say to them out of friendship: 'Oh Jews, come to your senses, return to the true faith; you must convert to Islam…" "Our belief is that this war, between us and the Jews, will continue to escalate until we vanquish the Jews and enter Jerusalem as conquerors, [and] enter Jaffa as conquerors. We are not merely expecting a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital; we are heralding [the creation of] an Islamic caliphate with Jerusalem as its capital…" "Oh beloved of Allah, as we always say: When the battles between the Muslims and infidels begin, the martyrs and the slain Muslims will reach Paradise… in contrast, those who die not for the sake of Islam, after the deliverance of the message of the Prophet Muhammad… will end up in the fires of Hell…"

TRADITIONAL ANTI-SEMITIC IMAGES BLOOD LIBEL

In a satire program aired November 17, 2001 on Abu Dhabi television, one of the most popular stations in the Arab world, an actor impersonating Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered soldiers to shoot captured Arabs and drink the blood of Arab children. In the Abu Dhabi television program, the Sharon impersonator sat opposite what appeared to be an Israeli citizen - dressed as an ultra-Orthodox Jew with kippah and sidelocks - and displayed bottles containing Arab blood. In another scene, an actor playing the role of Dracula is seen about to sink his teeth into "Sharon," who is portrayed as a terrorist throughout the skit. Immediately, the camera shifted to a news broadcast in which the newsreader reports that Dracula is dead, and that the cause is the fact that he drank "cruel, cold and polluted blood." The newsreader then concludes: "Sharon has taken responsibility for the incident."
