Documents The "Ashrawi Affair" - November 2003 Background In a controversial decision, Sydney University's Peace Foundation awarded its annual peace prize for 2003 to Palestinian academic and spokesperson Dr Hanan Ashrawi. In the lead-up to award ceremony on November 6, AIJAC and Jewish communal bodies in Victoria and New South Wales put their case, both publicly and in private meetings, that Dr Ashrawi's record made her a highly inappropriate choice for such a prestigious award. The outcry from the Jewish community, both in Australia and internationally, threw Dr Ashrawi's record into the spotlight, yet the campaign against her prize became a controversy in itself in which familiar accusations of undue Jewish political and financial influence were aired. Divisions unfortunately emerged in the Australian Jewish community over whether the campaign could have been handled better and the role that AIJAC and other organisations played. Below is the public record of AIJAC and its associates on the controversy. Key articles and documents Dr
