Iranian Commander: Iran seeks “full annihilation of Israel"

Following up my previous AIJAC blog post regarding former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's revelations that the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei told him in 2000 that "Israel must be burned to the ground" and forecasting an Iranian war to achieve this end, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi has also agreed that Iran's goal is to "annihilate" Israel.

Fars News Agency (considered a "semi-official" news agency with ties to the Iranian regime), reported that Firouzabadi said at a defence gathering in Tehran on May 20:

"The Iranian nation is standing for its cause that is the full annihilation of Israel."

Firouzabadi's recent comment can be added to the list of statements made by Iranian regime officials regarding Iran's intention to destroy Israel. Other such statements include Iranian President Ahmadinejad's repeated calls to "wipe Israel off the map", and Ayatollah Khamenei's declaration that the "Zionist regime is a real cancerous tumor that should be cut and will be cut, God Willing".

Iran also proudly admits to funding attacks on Israel via terrorist proxies, as Fars News Agency reported:

"Earlier this year, Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed in explicit remarks Iran's direct involvement in the Palestinian and Lebanese confrontation with Israel, including the Lebanese Summer 2006 33-day resistance against the Zionist regime.

‘Wherever Iran interferes, it announces it in a very straightforward manner. For instance, we interfered in confrontations against Israel, which resulted in the (Lebanese) victory in the 33-day war and (Palestinians' victory in) the 22-day (Gaza) war,' Ayatollah Khamenei said, addressing millions of Friday Prayers worshippers on Tehran University Campus in February.

‘In future too, we will support and help everyone who opposes the Zionist regime,' the Leader underscored."

It goes without saying that very clear Iranian threats to "annihilate" Israel along with the Iranian regime's funding, arming and training of terrorist organisations including Hamas, and Hezbollah to wage war against Israel, clearly justify strong Israeli concerns at the prospect of the Iranian regime obtaining nuclear weapons.
